In a few hours, Topaz and Numby will receive a character banner in Honkai Star Rail. Since her debut in the version 1.4 story, the intergalactic debt collector has already won the hearts of the community, but things get murkier when it comes to how she performs in battle. For the most part, Topaz is subordinate to the pig.
Let’s examine why. With her unique combat kit, Topaz and her trotter, Numby, are designed to launch counterattacks after an initial attack. She can be extremely strong on her own, but unlike other strong five-star characters like Blade and Jingliu, her power primarily depends on how many follow-up attacks you can actually use.

In case you’re unaware, in Honkai Star Rail, follow-up attacks usually appear only when specific combat requirements are fulfilled. Clara needs to be hit unless her ultimate is up, Himeko needs toughness breaks, etc. This implies that Topaz’s power is somewhat dependent on the other characters you choose to include.
Then there’s this other peculiar issue, where she appears to have been designed with a backup relic in mind. However, as of right now, none exist in the game! All of this means that Topaz feels like an investment unless you already have a backlog of characters to work with.
The creators of content that heavily relies on guides are reflecting this by expressing their opinions during the brief window that appears before Topaz and Numby’s banner is added to the game. Of course, there are people like me who are still committed to taking home Topaz and winning that 50/50.
Fun fact You really want two copies of Topaz and her five-star light cone for her to really shine. You’ll want 210 rolls / 33,600 stellar jades to be safe, since it typically takes 70 rolls to get a five star. Without accounting for first-purchase bonuses, that’s about £500, my friend. Good luck winning that 50/50; if you don’t, you’ll have to buy another 70 rolls. Have fun.
As a gacha game, Honkai Star Rail, all of this is to be expected. To the game’s credit, I, along with many other players, think this is one of the most f2p-friendly games on Hoyoverse. While it’s true that these characters aren’t inexpensive, clearing in-game content doesn’t actually require paying real money. Who knows? It might also go a long way toward giving away free rolls to people! Perhaps you’ll be fortunate. Or perhaps it’s how they trick you…
