This season, the game’s plot is taking center stage, according to Respawn Entertainment, the game’s developer. The beginning of Season 18 was completely unprecedented, with no new legends being added. This also occurred in Season 16, but this time there was a twist: Players were given access to Revenant, an old character who had recently acquired a brand-new set of skills—as well as a brand-new appearance.
In order to give players a chance to see what it’s like to live on a dropship with a group of deadly bloodsport competitors, two of whom are literally murder robots, Respawn decided to create Kill Code, a new animated series that is distinct from Stories From The Outlands (which usually deals with a legend’s past). Revenant was attempting to strangle Crypto when we last left him in Kill Code: Part 2, thinking that Crypto was to blame for the strange glitches he was experiencing. Naturally, it was discovered that Torres “Duardo” Silva, Octane’s grandfather, had actually been the one manipulating Revenant’s transformation.
The legends reunite in Kill Code: Part 3 for the first time in a very long time. Crypto, Loba, Valkyrie, Lifeline, Mad Maggie, and Revenant himself decide to break into the Malta facility where Duardo has hidden the source code for Revenant (which, oddly enough, is inside a Futurama-style head in a jar), in an effort to recover Revenant’s source code. Despite their differences, they all concur that while Revenant may be dangerous by nature, his danger increases significantly when he is under another person’s control. Unfortunately, almost immediately after the group enters the building, Lifeline is seen and recognized, causing the building to go into lockdown and security personnel to swarm the area.
The legends then engage in a rather bloody game of volleyball with Revenant’s jar-head, which keeps changing hands as they each struggle to maintain control of it while fending off the security guards. It gets so bad that Loba and Revenant, who are mortal enemies and have opposing goals for the jar-head (Loba wants to destroy it and Revenant wants to keep it safe so Revenant can never die), even reach a point where they are completely surrounded. They then call a truce and work together to defeat their enemies in a scene that is very reminiscent of watching Rey and Kylo Ren defeat the Praetorian Guard.
However, unlike the Force-users mentioned earlier, Loba and Revenant lose the battle in the end. When Valkyrie refuses to hand over the head, Loba almost pulls a gun on her, but the head vanishes from Valkyrie’s hands before a fight can start. Torres is able to snatch the old head-in-a-jar out of Valkyrie’s hands because Loba has unintentionally forgotten that her Black Market is still active in another area of the room. This angers Valkyrie, who is just trying to make sure Loba doesn’t spend the rest of her life letting hate and a thirst for revenge consume her, as well as Revenant, who just wants to die and Loba, who wants him to stay alive forever and suffer infinitely. Valkyrie is obviously very cautious after witnessing how willingly the woman she loves was willing to possibly shoot her.
But the thing that makes this episode so intriguing is that it’s the first time we’ve seen legends get into a heated argument and then decide to put it aside in order to save their squad. The relationship these legends formed after four years of ring combat seems to have fostered a sense of camaraderie among them, even in the most trying circumstances and even when they have competing objectives. Obviously, things didn’t turn out well. If they ever go to war with Torres, which is looking more and more likely, this could be especially helpful.
A never-before-seen giant mech that resembles a Pilot-less Titan and a Stalker having a child is one of the defenses Torres tries to employ against the legends. There is no way of knowing what else Torres has hidden in his numerous lairs if he is creating items like that in his lab. Whatever his plans may be, they seem to be substantial. large enough to possibly spark war. Even Revenant’s real name, Kaleb, is known to him. This probably means that he now has access to some secret information that he can use to further his control over Revenant and the other legends.
Although it’s unclear where the narrative will go next, Respawn’s developers have stated that the Kill Code miniseries will continue for the remainder of 2023. That certainly appears to be the case based on the enormous “TO BE CONTINUED…” text that suddenly appeared on the screen at the end of the episode.Don’t forget to finish your battle pass! Season 18 may be almost over, but it appears that the massive conflict between the legends and Torres has just begun.
