Bethesda has said that it is committed to supporting Starfield and that at least one more story extension would be released after releasing Shattered Space this year.
In an interview with MrMattyPlays on YouTube, Todd Howard of Bethesda Game Studios said that the firm intends to release a yearly story expansion for “hopefully a very long time.”
Sci-fi role-playing game Starfield, Bethesda’s first original IP in years, debuted in September 2023. It was also the studio’s first mainstream single-player title since Microsoft acquired parent company ZeniMax Media in March 2021. “Starfield has a lot of forces working against it, but eventually its gravitational pull is difficult to resist due to the allure of its expansive roleplaying quests and respectable combat,” we stated.
Although Bethesda has not yet released a sales figure, Howard stated that Starfield has now attracted 14 million players since its release on PC, Xbox Series X and S, and directly into Xbox subscription program Game Pass. Shattered Space, the game’s first story expansion, will be available later in 2024. Microsoft recently unveiled the trailer for the game at their Xbox Games Showcase event.
MrMattyPlays questioned Howard on Bethesda’s plans to keep releasing yearly Starfield story expansions during the interview. More or less, Howard retorted. We’re planning for the one after this, so there will be another one, but we’re not sure how long it will last. Hopefully very long.

In terms of content, we’re examining our work on Fallout 4’s Far Harbor.
Howard shared intriguing information regarding the scale and scope of Shattered Space, drawing comparisons to the well-received Fallout 4 DLC Far Harbor.
“Shatterspace is one of the things we always enjoyed about it from the beginning, but I don’t believe many people know that the majority of the expansion pack takes place there once you get to the city and planet. It lets us have the city and the quest while still creating a landscape the way we would normally do. Thus, that tale is set in that location.
“In terms of content, we’re examining our work on Fallout 4’s Far Harbor. This scale works well for our development when we perform yearly tale expansions like this. I’m quite enthusiastic about that since it allows us to accomplish some things the same way we did in earlier games and gives players a little different experience—it’s still Starfield, but it takes place in this new kind of alien planet that you can explore.
Starfield is sometimes criticized for having too little exploration across a thousand worlds, many of which were declared uninhabitable due to procedural generation. Earlier Bethesda games in the Elder Scrolls and Fallout series, on the other hand, are set in specific regions with intricately designed cities and other points of interest.
Shattered Space, which has the sound of a more conventional Bethesda experience, is, according to Howard, the studio’s internal response to the game it had created rather than necessarily a reply to that criticism. Howard emphasized, “It wasn’t a reaction.” “We also had our own reaction to it.”
The 450-person Bethesda Game Studios is working hard on five different teams right now: Fallout 76, Elder Scrolls 6, mobile, Starfield, and outside development collaborations. The previously mentioned Elder Scrolls 6, continued Fallout 76 content, a number of mobile apps, patches for previous games, and eventually the next Fallout are all being worked on.
Will a sequel to Starfield be released? If that comes to pass, it might take some time before we see anything of it because another Fallout game is scheduled to release after Elder Scrolls 6, which is anticipated to launch no early than 2028.
