Black State, a graphically striking new third-person action-adventure from developer Motion Blur, is set to combine the reality-bending portal technology of Portal with the espionage action of Metal Gear Solid, if the spectacular announcement trailer is any indication. It is being developed on the PC and runs on the Unreal Engine 5.
We spoke with the developers at Turkey-based Motion Blur about Black State after seeing the game’s full in-game trailer (see it above, honestly). Firstly, the plot of the story: “An enigmatic mission to free a scientist in captivity and discover the truth about a catastrophic incident calls for the summoning of a former military legend. The objective, given by mysterious Architects, is ambiguous because certain doors within the uncharted area lead to dangerous and unforeseen places. In order to fulfill his job and uncover the hidden facts, he must traverse this perilous terrain, learning what lies behind each threshold as each door reveals new secrets and difficulties.”
Regarding the Metal Gear analogy, our next query was: “It goes without saying that we adore the Metal Gear Solid series. For two and a half years, we labored over our massive, nearly 500-page game design document, admiring titles like The Last of Us, Metal Gear Solid, Uncharted, and several more that push the boundaries of gameplay mechanics and development. Motivated by these sources of inspiration, our little team is dedicated, in spite of our small size, to producing the best possible gameplay mechanics and development quality. Our goal is to produce a profound and captivating gaming experience by fusing captivating gameplay mechanics with rich and meaningful storyline. Our objective is to challenge ourselves to the utmost and deliver the greatest experience we can to players.”
Over the course of the last three years, Black State has been developed. The Motion Blur team claims that Kadir Demirden’s inventive thinking was the source of the concept for Black State. He has been developing this idea for more than ten years in his head. A lot of research and development was done during this time to see if a small team could make a AAA-caliber game.”
